MUNICIPAL DISTRICT:

Alaior.

DESCRIPTION:

Basilica of Syrian type, with rectangular plan, portico (in quite bad condition), "narthex", three naves and tripartite head with internal apse.

The access to its interior was made through the small central portico (that stands out of the rest of the plan and that is also rectangular) and by two lateral doors (one to each side of this one) that lead directly to the "narthex" (at the present someone discusses if that one of the south really existed). From this one passed to the naves by three well differentiated doors (one for each one of them).

Once in the interior, there are the two arrays of six rectangular pillars that separated the three naves, the two first embedded into the wall of the "narthex" and the two last into this one of the head. This head, tripartite, as we have already pointed out, had a plant lightly trapezoidal viewing it from the exterior, while, internally, the two lateral rooms were rectangular and the central one of apsidal plan. Before this central room, or "presbytery", the excavations put in the open a higher pavement that arrives until the second group of pillars (the penultimate one if we count from the three doors of the "narthex") and that it should correspond to the "sanctuary." In the lateral naves, several burials were found.

In what refers to the pavement and the cover, it seems that the first one would be of mortar of lime in the whole building, while of the second one we can practically only suppose that it leaned on a series of arches that, lengthwise, went from pillar to pillar and whose remains were found during the first excavations (made the years 1951-1952).

To finish, we will highlight the "holy-water font", now in the northern "pastofory" and primitively outside, which is like an immense cylindrical mill wheel, with an interior casting in form of Greek cross with lobar arms.
